Bayer process - Wikipedia

The Bayer process is the principal industrial means of refining bauxite to produce alumina (aluminium oxide) and was developed by Carl Josef Bayer. Bauxite, the most important ore of aluminium, contains only 30–60% aluminium oxide (Al2O3), the rest being a mixture of silica, various iron oxides, and titanium dioxide. The aluminium oxide must be purified before it can be refined to aluminium metal.

ARTICLE: Addressing the Challenge of Bauxite Residue - Light Metal Age Magazine

Mar 11, 2019  The largest waste by-product generated in the Bayer bauxite refining process is bauxite residue, commonly called red mud. An enormous quantity of caustic red mud is generated worldwide every year, posing a very serious and alarming environmental and safety problem. The storage of red mud is a challenge for alumina refineries (Figure 1), as ...

How Aluminium is Made The Australian Aluminium Council

Alumina Refining. All Australian alumina refineries use the Bayer Process to extract alumina from bauxite. Inputs typically include caustic soda, energy in the form of gas or coal (to produce the required heat and steam for the process), flocculants (to assist the sedimentation process), and water (to recover the caustic soda for reuse).

An overview of this conversion process and the materials along the way are described here. Bauxite. Aluminum starts out as bauxite ore – an aluminum ore formed from laterite soil. Bauxite is the world’s primary source of aluminum. Before it can become aluminum, however, bauxite destined for use as aluminum must first be processed into alumina.

The Chemistry and Processing of Jamaican Bauxite

In October, 1943, Alcan was incorporated under the name Jamaica Bauxites Limited as a Jamaican company to investigate the commercial potential of Jamaican bauxite. In the same year, 2500 tonnes of ore was shipped to the USA for process investigation and it was realised that the bauxite was suitable for processing using Bayer technology.
